When: Saturday, Sep 19 at 3 PM. Where: Grand Theatre - 316 W. 3rd, Grand Island. Cost: Free. Community members are invited to a free showing of the film The Peanut Butter Falcon, hosted by Grand Island Citizen Advocacy. The Peanut Butter Falcon seamlessly weaves humor, heart, and rugged adventure into a timeless tale about choosing your own family. The film follows Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way, he teams up with a small-time outlaw on the run, and together they navigate the waterways of the American South, forging an unbreakable and unexpected bond. Critically Acclaimed: Winner of the Audience Award at SXSW and widely praised for its warmth, performances, and cinematography. Speaking on the film’s creation and its themes, co-writer and co-director Tyler Nilson noted in an interview: "I love the idea of connectedness and that not necessarily being your blood... there's a common theme of community and family that comes from us." The intention is simple: to create a space for people to engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can build a community where everyone truly belongs. Zak's story on screen perfectly captures the idea that "everyone has the right to take risks, dream big, and choose their own path including people with disabilities". Grand Island Citizen Advocacy invites the community to join us for a relaxing afternoon to enjoy a great movie, meet our board members who will be volunteering to serve popcorn, and reflect on how we are part of, or how we help create, our community.
